Police Investigate Shooting of Toddler in Glenarden

Prince George’s County Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s District III Investigative Section is investigating a shooting outside of an apartment complex in the Town of Glenarden, Maryland, which left a toddler in critical condition.
On August 21, 2011, at approximately 9:15 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 3000 block of Brightseat Road for the report of a shooting.  When the officers arrived, they found a boy, less than a month away from his 2nd birthday, suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.  He was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted and remains in critical but stable condition.
The investigation has revealed that two armed suspects began to shoot at one another in the apartment complex.  A stray bullet from that firefight struck the toddler as he was being held in his mother’s arms, a good distance away, in front of the apartments.  Detectives are now working to find Deven Angel Matos, 18, who has been identified as a person of interest in this case.  The investigation is ongoing.
“This is a senseless act of violence that has nearly cost an innocent child his life,” said Chief of Police Mark A. Magaw, “and we are devoting extensive resources to finding the people involved.”
