Let Us Remember Fallen Officer Charles F. Caldwell

  Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Officer Charles F. Caldwell, lost this day in 1948 while arresting an assault suspect in George Sector.

        Ofc. Caldwell was born on January 12, 1912 in Washington, D.C.  He was raised in Mount Rainier, Maryland and graduated from Mount Rainier High School.  Ofc. Caldwell joined the Prince George's County Police Department on July 13, 1943 and was assigned to the Hyattsville District Station.

        On the evening of June 12, 1948 at approximately 1800 hours, Ofc. Caldwell and his partner responded to a fight complaint in the 5300 Blk. Nash St. Fairmount Heights, Maryland.  Upon arrival, Ofc. Caldwell placed a female subject under arrest for assault.  As he escorted the female to his police vehicle, Ofc. Caldwell was attacked by her father.  The arrestee's father seized the officer's weapon and opened fire, striking Ofc. Caldwell three times in the chest and his partner in the arm and leg.  Ofc. Caldwell was rushed to Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale, Maryland where he succumbed to his wounds at 1900 hours.

        Ofc. Caldwell served the Prince George's County Police Department for five years and was the second member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.  He was the third law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.

        At the time of his death, Officer Charles F. Caldwell was 36 years old and survived by his wife and two young sons.
